Mascot Peruna (1951) by Leila Rostiser
Mascot Peruna, by Leila Rostiser
This book, originally published in 1951, is an extremely scarce book due to both its age and its small audience. I have faithfully reproduced the book here from its original printing. All typos are likely my fault, where as all the awkward phrases and sentence structure and use of certain adjectives are directly as written in the text. I have not changed anything. This book has been out of print for many years and copies rarely appear in the secondary market. As of now, I know of approximately six copies. One is owned by Fondren Library, one by DeGolyer Library, and four in collectors' hands. I hope that by providing this document on this website, I can spread this great children's book to the countless people who would never have a chance otherwise to read it. It is interesting to note that this is not the story of how Peruna became SMU's mascot, but rather, how Peruna V became Peruna V, as evidenced by the main plot development of the last two chapters.
Please realize before reading that this book was written over fifty years ago and thus uses vernacular that one may not consider "politically correct," but I present it here, unaltered, for its historical interest as a piece from that period as well as to provide a unique view on Peruna. I hope you enjoy it. Once again, all credit belongs to Leila Rostiser for her work with the SMU Office of Information to put together this great tale of Peruna.
